Philosophy

Cultivating the field between people and organizations.

The name Asafield comes from our representative’s family name, Asahata, written with the characters for hemp (asa) and field (hata). Like a field where crops ripen, we use coaching to build teams and organizations in which people share the joy of deciding for themselves and grow together. That is our philosophy.

We believe curiosity is what drives people to grow. Rather than handing out advice, we work with each person’s curiosity and build relationships in which people grow of their own accord, not because they are told to. Our consistent work across three layers, individuals, teams, and organizations, is rooted in this belief.

We aim for teams and organizations that are autonomous and self-sustaining. Once an agile mindset has taken root, our role has served its purpose.

Start from curiosity
We do not impose answers; we ask questions back. We believe learning and change come from a team thinking and deciding for itself.
Look at relationships
We don’t treat a problem as one person’s issue. We see a team or organization as a single system and work with what happens between people and between departments.
Keep learning
We keep learning as practitioners ourselves, and bring what we learn from international coaching and organizational design back to our work on the ground.

Founded Asafield Inc. to offer, from an independent position, the knowledge gained in software development, agile transformation, and coaching.
Apr 2026
Took early retirement from IBM Japan, Ltd. after 31 years of service.
2024–
While serving as a line manager in the agile consulting practice, supported agile transformations at large enterprises as an agile coach. In parallel, earned international credentials, starting with a professional coach credential from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), followed by credentials in systems coaching and organizational design.
2019–
Worked full-time as a Scrum Master and agile coach. At leading life insurance, city banking, regional banking, and manufacturing companies, among others, supported the launch and scaling of Scrum teams, in-house development, agile transformation training for managers, and organizational change.
2015–
As a leader in the mobile delivery practice, applied agile development across multiple mobile app projects. Also designed and taught internal and external training and workshops.
1995
Completed the doctoral program in Applied Physics at the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University (Ph.D. in Engineering). Joined IBM Japan, Ltd. the same year as a software developer.
